When then-Archbishop Joseph Ritter of St. Louis was named a cardinal in 1961, he received an autographed baseball from Stan Musial. On it was written: "From one St. Louis Cardinal to another."
Musial "was a devout Catholic, and he had a good sense of humor," said Msgr. Joseph Baker, recalling the gift of the autographed baseball. "He was a great man. He and (then-Cardinals second baseman) Red Schoendienst went to Mass all the time, good examples of devout Catholics and really good people."
